DescriptionBetween downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights stands the Los Angeles River, flanked by many railroad tracks that lead to the shipping centers of the city and its suburbs. Bridges and freeway overpasses were built to take automobile traffic over the river gulch and above this conglomeration of railway tracks. Some of those bridges can be seen in this painting, with the Art Deco-style Los Angeles County General Hospital complex looming in the background.

Mondrus received his MFA in 1955 from Claremont Graduate School and exhibited widely in California and elsewhere in the United States. His paintings and prints can be found in many private and public collections, including the Downey Art Museum, the Skirball Museum and Gardena High School, as well as in the Hilbert Collection.
