DescriptionArtist’s Statement: Mark Hilbert commissioned this painting after seeing another large Balboa Park commission of mine called A Day at the Prado. In order to narrow down a location, Mark and I met at the park in San Diego one morning and wandered around taking photos. There were so many views that appealed to him, it was hard to decide on just one, but we finally narrowed it down to this iconic scene. There were three major challenges in designing the imagery for this painting: The flower beds were barren, the distant palm trees covered too much of the tower and all of the visitors were wearing face masks. In order to overcome these challenges, I re-composed the photo by lowering the palm trees, adding flowers to the garden and taking masks off of the visitors.
