DescriptionThe Southern California region in and near Long Beach was a center for oil production in the 1930s to 1970s era. During this time it was not unusual to see oil rigs or wooden pumping towers in people's backyards or on vacant lots in residential neighborhoods. Artist John Bohnenberger frequently went to these lots in neighborhoods, set up right on the sidewalk and painted watercolors while viewing the subject matter. This is one of those works, which is believed to have been painted near Signal Hill on the edge of Long Beach.
