DescriptionJohn Bohnenberger was born in Chicago and moved to the West Coast with his family when he was 14 years old. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army, and made his home in California after returning from duty. He worked as a government employee for many years, but found plenty of time to pursue his passion: painting in watercolors. He was a self-taught artist who worked in a variety of styles, ranging from tight and representational to very loose and semi-abstract. Many of his works fit into the Social Realism movement of California art in the 20th century, which focused on gritty realism and portrayals of everyday life. His paintings of harbors and cityscapes brought him many awards, but his other subjects, including a series of suburban California neighborhood scenes, have also received critical praise.
