DescriptionGrowing up in Harlem, New York in the 1930s, Ringgold was surrounded by a thriving art and jazz scene that nurtured her creativity. As a Black woman artist and activist, she spoke out against race and gender-based inequality, in word and in art. Her advice: “Find your voice and don't worry about what other people think." An artist working in several mediums, she is best known for her narrative quilts. This is the image that Ringgold created for the cover of her fifteenth children’s book, about Henry Ossawa Tanner. Tanner (1859–1937) was the first African American to achieve international acclaim as an artist, spending most of his career in France.
