DescriptionBorn in Montana, Joseph Edward Knowles grew up in San Diego and by the age of 20 was living in Santa Barbara. He studied fine art at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts, and taught art for more than 30 years at the Cate School in Carpentaria, as well as teaching extension classes at UCSB and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. He is well-known for his California Scene watercolors, finding inspiration in scenes of everyday life such as this train station, painted in a direct, boldly stated and individualistic style.
