DescriptionJoseph Knowles was a Santa Barbara based watercolor artist who actively painted California Scene Paintings during the 1930 to 1970 era. He painted a wide variety of subject matter, but is best known for the paintings he produced which focused on everyday work activities in the vicinity of train yards and other industrial sections of the city. This scene focuses on dockworkers and was probably done right on location in Santa Barbara county near where he lived.
