DescriptionDong Kingman, of Chinese-American descent, was one of the leading painters of the California Scene Painting movement. He was born Dong Moy Shu in Oakland, Calif., but his family returned to Hong Kong shortly thereafter, and he spent his formative years there. In accordance with Chinese custom, he was given a “school name”: one of his instructors, knowing of his interest in art, dubbed him “King Man” (Cantonese for “scenery” and “composition”). When he was in his late teens, his family returned to California and he later combined his school name into “Kingman,” placing his family name “Dong” first. Trains, train stations and railroad signage were favorite subjects for Kingman.
