DescriptionArtist Statement:Down past the south end of Orange County is a surf break affectionately called “Church,” named for the few benches placed before a wooden cross sitting just above the berm of The Marine Corps’ Beach on Camp Pendleton. This outdoor “Church,” used by a few Marines, is a place of inspired reflection.
Out in the water is not only a majestic view but also a spectacular surf break.
For civilians, it is a concerted effort to get down there- almost a right of passage for small band of ambitious surfers.
The old Lifeguard building that is the subject of this painting no longer presides over this beach, demolished one day -after years of sunbleach and sea salt -in the efficacious manner attributable to the Marine Corps.
I’d hoped to collect the leftover wood to build a frame for this painting- but by the time I’d arrived, all that remained were wriggled rake marks in the sand.
Time moves on.
