DescriptionMillard Sheets was one of the founding artists who launched the California Scene painting style (scenes of everyday life in the Golden State) in the 1930s. By his later years, much of his work focused on the beauty of the California coast. Here, Sheets paints Point Lobos, often called “The Crown Jewel of the California State Parks.” He shows the viewer a variety of natural attractions – rocks, sea and sky – painted in a multitude of colors to dazzle the eye. As in his 1969 design for the mosaic that graces the west façade of the Hilbert Museum, he uses the sweeping arc of seabirds’ flight to add motion to the composition. On View
