DescriptionThe celebrated California artist Millard Sheets was an avid traveler, embarking on his first world explorations while he was still a student at Chouinard, and continuing his travels as an artist-correspondent for Life magazine during World War II, assigned to the China-Burma-India front. But it was not until he was invited by the U.S. State Department in 1960 to be an American Art Specialist – in effect, an art ambassador – that his world travels began in earnest. Throughout the next 20 years, he presented lectures and workshops across the globe, including stays in Turkey and the Soviet Union. He found watercolor to be the perfect medium for his art while traveling, as it was portable and dried quickly. In 1967 he undertook a round-the-world workshop tour that brought him to Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Lebanon, Greece and Britain. This watercolor -- which reflects Japanese painting styles in its distinctive foreground trees and atmospheric reflections – was inspired by and possibly painted during that trip.On View
