DescriptionDuncan Gleason was an avid sailor and noted marine historian. The schooner pictured under sail here was the Lottie Carson, built in 1881. By 1936 is was docked in Los Angeles and had been restored and refitted for use in Hollywood films. Between 1936 and 1940 it was used in at least three movies, all of which featured film shot in the Catalina Channel between Los Angeles Harbor and Catalina Island. Gleason no doubt sailed on this schooner and produced sketches from which this painting was produced.
