DescriptionArtist's Statement:"If you’re making California figurative art, it’s a no-brainer that you want the figures to be outdoors in the California sun. Figurative art gives the feeling of watching something staged. I’m watching it, recording it as someone records a diary. I get lost in the patterns on parade. Yet the people engaging in fun activities seem alienated from one another. If you think of someone who is beached, they are aground and stranded. This painting is part of a series I call my “beach noir” paintings.
I’ve always loved Piet Mondrian. I love that he chiseled everything down to bare geometrics. When I looked at this seaside scene, I tried to connect the gay beach blankets and bathing suits with the beauty of stark geometry.
This painting was begun in 2006, exhibited at The Artists Gallery (TAG) in Santa Monica in 2011, but modified to its final appearance in 2021. Other paintings in my beach noir series have been selected for exhibition at the Palm Springs Museum of Art in 2007 and the Phoenix Art Museum in 2011."
