DescriptionJae Carmichael was born in Hollywood, California in 1925. She studied at Mills College and earned a BFA from the University of Southern California as well as a Ph.D. in cinematography and art history. Among her teachers and mentors were Francis de Erdely, Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, Dong Kingman and William Gaw. In 1953, she became a member of the California Water Color Society and was a longtime exhibitor in their annual shows.In addition to painting in both oils and watercolors, Carmichael created sculptures, mosaics and films. She was a director of the Pasadena School of Fine Arts, president of the Pasadena Society of Artists, and served as an adjunct professor of cinema at the USC film school. From 1962-66, she was director of the Wooden Horse Gallery in Laguna Beach. She became the Founding Director of the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena in 1972.
She staged more than 200 solo exhibitions in galleries in Los Angeles, Japan, and Europe, and her works are included in permanent collections of the Oakland Museum of California, the Long Beach Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as well as the Hilbert Museum.
