DescriptionThe focal point of this painting is a place that the artist Dong Kingman was very familiar with. It was called Black Cat Bar or Café and was located at 710 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. The area where this well-known gathering spot was once located is now the Financial District, quite near where the Transamerica Pyramid now stands. The Black Cat's clientele ranged from writers and artists like John Steinbeck and Maynard Dixon to Beat poets, prostitutes, longshoremen and movie stars. It developed a somewhat scandalous reputation. It was also the site, at least once, of a one-man show of works by Kingman. On View
