DescriptionJae Carmichael was an eclectic artist, writer and independent filmmaker whose career included more than 200 solo exhibitions in galleries in Los Angeles, Japan and Europe. Born in Los Angeles, Carmichael studied at Mills College, earned her bachelor’s degree from USC, a master’s in fine arts from what is now Claremont Graduate University, and a doctorate in cinematography and art history at USC, where she taught classes in film and television for many years. She served as founding director of the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena (now part of USC), and her work is included in the permanent collections of the Oakland Museum of California, the Long Beach Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. Carmichael’s 1976 film “Heritage of Hope,” which she made for the L.A. Unified School District, was nominated for an Emmy Award.
