DescriptionThe location of this old gas station is purported to be on Route 395 along the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is part of a series of painting that Jack Kay produced during the 1960's. They were all inspired by old gas stations, stores, and diners that has been closed down and were in various stages of ruin. Most of these business were built along old state and county roads in the 1920s and 1930s but when the freeway systems were constructed in California after World War II, the traffic flow was diverted off those old roads and onto the freeways. This caused many such business to immediately close down. Others he found along the major routes like Route 66 and Highway 395. Kay liked the textures of the dilapidated buildings and painted these works in a bold, modern manner. On View
