DescriptionPaul Darrow of Laguna Beach, who passed away on November 11, 2019 at the age of 98, was nationally renowned as a painter, muralist, watercolorist, etcher, photographer, collage and mixed media artist. Darrow was educated at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center and at the Claremont Graduate School, studying under Milford Zornes, Millard Sheets, Phil Dike and Phil Paradise. Darrow’s illustrations appeared in The New York Times and New York Magazine, and his piquant cartoons poking fun at political, social and local issues appeared in the pages of the Claremont Courier from 1954 until his death, attracting a devoted following. Many nautical people in and around Laguna Beach also knew him as the skipper of Gleam, a Cal 30 racer. Darrow taught at Scripps College and the Claremont Graduate School for 37 years. His works have been exhibited widely, including a 2003 show at the Peter Blake Gallery in Laguna Beach, and are in many museum collections. He sent this waggish lion to Arthur Millier as a Christmas card in 1963. On View
