DescriptionIn this colorful serigraph, Phil Dike brings us a regatta of the different types of craft that ply the waters of Balboa Harbor, from stately sailing yachts to stout little fishing boats. The bright, flat, jewel-like colors and repeating forms lend this work a decorative, complex (“byzantine”) quality. The title is also a hat-tip to Los Angeles Times art critic Henry Seldis, who coined the phrase “Balboa Bay Byzantine” to refer to the work of Dike and his group of top artists who had painted the Newport Beach area for more than decades.

Rex Brandt, Dike’s friend and teaching partner in the Brandt-Dike School of Art, mentioned one of the dictionary definitions of “byzantine” in a 1983 talk: “A blending of oriental voluptuousness with the architectural spirit of the west -- characterized by a lack of perspective, opulent colors, especially gold, and the use of symbols."
