DescriptionSaar’s art became political as she was growing up in Los Angeles; by the 1970s, she was at the center of the city’s vibrant Black Arts movement. “The personal is political” became a fundamental principle of her work. A practitioner of assemblage art, a found-object process, her work "The Liberation of Aunt Jemima" challenged a pervasive racial stereotype. This is a one of a series of mixed media collages Saar created in collaboration with author and filmmaker Zora Neale Hurston, for their book "Bookmarks in the Pages of Life: A Selection of Short Stories."
