DescriptionRobert Clunie was born in 1895 in Scotland. In 1911, he and his brother William came to New York and went to live with relatives in Michigan. He worked as a pin-stripe artist with the local farm machinery manufacturer. In 1917, Clunie took a train trip to California and was enthralled by the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The following year, he and his brother William settled in Los Angeles.In 1928, Clunie first painted Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in continental United States, located near the small community of in Lone Pine. For the next 30 years, Clunie would return annually to paint in Lone Pine and its surroundings. In declining health, Clunie died in 1984, in Los Gatos, California.
