DescriptionAfter graduating from Yale University and serving in WWII for a year before being discharged, Theophilus Brown returned to Paris to study art. When Brown returned to New York, he delved into the Abstract Expressionist movement alongside painters such as de Kooning and Rothko. Brown grew to reject Abstract Expressionism and moved to San Francisco to study at UC Berkeley, where he immersed himself in the Bay Area Figurative Movement. It was here he met his life partner and fellow artist Paul Wonner. While Brown may have shifted focus of the content of his work to the figurative scenes he saw around him, his work clearly exhibits the influence of the Abstract Expressionist movement he began his career in.Clark Silva, Curator
