DescriptionDuring the century span from 1860 and 1960, there were large numbers of rural farms and ranches in the San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando Valley and Pomona Valley. Barns were needed for equipment storage, feed storage and often as a covered area for livestock.

As the farms and ranches went out of business to make way for suburban development, Charles Payzant and other California artists made a point of visiting them and visually recording the barns and ranching activities before they were all gone.

At the time this watercolor was produced, Charles Payzant was also beginning the illustration art project for the Dick and Jane series of children’s educational books.
