DescriptionMark Hilbert: “Loran taught art at UC Berkeley, where he served as chair of the art department in the 1950s and was instrumental in the education of Richard Diebenkorn and other outstanding Bay Area artists. This is a very colorful piece with splotches of red and gold. It’s characteristic of what Loran did when teaching painting at Berkeley, where they painted ‘out of the lines’ using blocks of color. He trained a lot of students who later went on to become participants in the Bay Area Figurative movement. This style with its large patches of color became a signature of the Bay Area painters moving forward.”On View
