DescriptionThis painting was produced on one of many painting excursions that Southern California artist Ralph Hulett took to Mexico. He was fascinated with the people and culture, so many of the works he produced were inspired by the desire to visually capture the Mexican people and their culture on canvas. In many parts of old Mexico the towns were largely built around a church with open areas for people to gather in front of those structures. The church in this scene painting, believed to be in Colima, Mexico, is typical of the buildings erected during the New Spain colonial period when Spain was in control of the county now known as Mexico.
Oil paintings and watercolors produced on Hulett’s Mexico excursions were exhibited regularly during the 1960s and brought him quite a lot of attention. At that time the roads in Mexico were greatly improved which encouraged increased travel into that country. As a result, art depicting scenes of Mexico also became of interest.
