DescriptionAustrian-born Franz Bischoff immigrated to the United States as a teenager, and worked in New York, Ohio and Michigan before finally moving to California in 1900. He first gained success as a porcelain painter and manufacturer of porcelain glazes, as well as being a watercolor teacher. Bischoff was one of the earliest members of the California Art Club, and took up canvas painting, attempting to capture the unique California light and landscape. He painted farm, mountain and coastal scenes throughout California – and some of his paintings, including this one, show influences of Expressionism and even Fauvism in their heavily applied, emphatic brushwork and bold swipes of color.
