DescriptionHarry Anderson was a prolific painter of illustrations for popular American publications, including The Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Redbook and many others. A devout Seventh-Day Adventist, he also produced more than 300 religious-themed illustrations for Adventist pamphlets and publications, including his most famous work (one whose prints were ubiquitous on the walls of Sunday schools throughout the U.S.), “What Happened to Your Hand?,” depicting Jesus surrounded by modern-day children. He also created many religious paintings for the LDS Church, which still exhibits them in its Temple Square Visitor Center and church office buildings in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the 1960s and ‘70s Anderson was commissioned to paint a series of calendars featuring classic automobiles for Exxon Oil (then Esso), which were handed out at all of the company’s service stations. These paintings are typical of Anderson’s sunlit, highly detailed illustrative style. His art earned Anderson many accolades during his lifetime, including the New York Art Directors Club Award and induction into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame.
