DescriptionBroadway is one of the oldest streets in Los Angeles. When plans were laid out for the City of Los Angeles downtown area, this street was called Fort Street. But by 1890 it became known as Broadway. By 1915 the downtown stretch of Broadway was home to many large department stores, theaters and other shopping and entertainment attractions. An electric train went down the center of the street and transported thousands of people to and from this city center. Southern California artist Ralph Hulett spent a great deal of time painting on location in the Chinatown area of Los Angeles and this work depicts a group of old buildings along Broadway where it runs through that historic part of the city. It is part of a series of oil and watercolor paintings Hulett produced in the 1950's and 1960's that document many old buildings in Los Angeles that have since been torn down.On View
