DescriptionBeginning his artistic career with oils, Reep began to transition into watercolors while in art school, before being drafted into WWII. After the war, during which he served as an official combat artist, Reep was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, which allowed him to develop his painting skills. Like many Los Angeles-area artists of the time, Reep worked for the film industry, and taught for a time at Chouinard Art Institute. In this painting, Reep captures a dignified pensiveness in the boxer's face – how many fights has this man been through, how many more to come? There is a kinship between the worn face of this fighter and the many humanizing scenes of soldiers Reep drew during his time in Italy during WWII.
