DescriptionArthur “Beau” Beaumont was best known as a highly skillful painter of ships and the sea, particularly of the brave vessels that fought in World War II. In 1933, the British-born, Chouinard-educated Beaumont was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, beginning an association with the Navy that last nearly five decades. He became the official artist of the United States Fleet and served in that capacity and later as a freelance artist for the Navy until his death in 1978. After the war, he was often commissioned by veterans to paint the vessels they served aboard. At the age of 70, Beaumont was appointed staff artist on an expedition to the South Pole, and captured this image of McMurdo Station, the U.S. Antarctic research center on the south tip of Ross Island. On View
