DescriptionAs the enormously influential art critic for the Los Angeles Times from 1926 to his retirement in 1958, Arthur Millier maintained close friendships with many of California’s most distinguished artists, including Millard Sheets and Emil Kosa Jr., and had a significant impact on their success through the power of his published critiques and opinions. The British-born Millier was also an accomplished artist in his own right, with a passion for creating etchings. He studied etching at the California School of Fine Arts, and initially etched and printed urban scenes before gravitating toward California landscapes. His first solo exhibition was in 1922. That same year, he moved back to Los Angeles, where he held teaching positions at Chouinard, Otis and Pasadena Art Institutes and USC.
Four years passed before Millier was given the opportunity that would define him: he was appointed art critic for the L.A. Times and would hold this position for more than three decades. Millier’s etchings are included in the permanent collections of such major institutions as LACMA and the Art Institute of Chicago.
