DescriptionWhen Ruth Ortlieb was in college in Claremont in the 1930's, she produced a series of watercolors for her graduate art exhibition. This series focused on the fish canning industry that was a major industry in San Diego were this artist resided most of her life. It included paintings depicting California scenes of the fisherman at work, the dock workers unloading the catches, and interior views of canning operations where rows of women worked for assembly lines. This watercolor represented the part of the industry where the fisherman were catching fish. The series was well received and she received her degree having studied most of the time at that school with Millard Sheets. - Gordon McClelland, Curator
