DescriptionRueven Rubin, born to a poor Hasidic Jewish family in Romania, rose to become a prominent artist and later served as Israel’s first ambassador to Romania. In 1912 he left home to study at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, in what was then Palestine, and then continued his studies in Paris. In 1921, he traveled to New York City, where he met artist Alfred Stieglitz, who helped organize Rubin’s first American exhibition. Rubin moved permanently to Palestine, where he became one of the founders of the Eretz-Yisrael style, focusing on Biblical scenes and characters and the ancient landscape and cities. After Israeli independence, Rubin became its first minister (ambassador) to his native Romania. He left a large collection of his art to the city of Tel Aviv after his death, and today you can visit the Rubin Museum there in his former house. On View
