NORMAN ROCKWELL: Capturing the American Spirit
Beloved illustrator Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) created compelling stories in paint and pencil that have found their way into the hearts – and the collective subconscious – of America. He was both a mythmaker and a master spinner of tales who could weave an entire narrative into a single frame. While some prominent art critics turned up their noses at Rockwell during his lifetime, deriding his work as commercial and sentimental, this iconic artist has undergone a critical reboot in recent years, receiving praise for both his keen social observation and his immense skill as a figurative painter. This exhibition includes original Rockwell paintings, drawings and artist prints selected from The Hilbert Collection and on loan from the Bank of America Collection.
