A MATTER OF STYLE: Modernism in California Scene Art

Friday, February 23, 2024 - Saturday, August 3, 2024
All noteworthy professional artists develop at least one specific style of art. In many cases the style they develop is like that of other artists of the past or present. However, in some rarer cases, the artists style is so unique that it can often be recognized, without even looking for a name on the art.

This exhibition focuses on artist that fit into that second category. Most of them lived in Southern California and actively produced art during the fifty-year period between 1920 and 1970. Some produced various degrees of abstract art and others developed non-objective art.

Although some works might look conservative by todays standards, at the time they were produced, the styles were considered quite progressive by fellow artists and the regional art community.

A statement by each of the artist, regarding their art, is presented when available. For the other artists, information from art reviews of their work is provided.
